The game is played on a wheel with 37 or 38 pockets and a ball that will fall into one of those pockets after the wheel is spun and the ball is released in a counter direction of the direction the wheel is spinning in. The 37 pockets apply to European roulette, which has one 0 number, and the American roulette has two zeros, 0 and 00. The other pockets are numbers, 1 to 36. The object of the game is to guess which pocket will the ball fall in.
However, to win on roulette it’s not necessary to actually guess the exact number, which has a 1:37 or 1:38 chance, there are many things that make this a lot easier than you may think. As each number has a color, Red or Black, the player can bet on either Red or Black, not the exact number, and therefore get close to 50% chance of guessing right and winning money. There’s one more bet like this, and that’s Odd or Even.
The player can also choose if the number will be in the first twelve, second twelve, or third twelve of thirty-six numbers, which then has almost a 1/3 chance of happening.
The purpose of Zero is to give the house an edge. If the ball lands on Zero, all Red/Black, Odd/Even and 1st/2nd/3rd bets are lost because Zero doesn’t fit the criteria for those bets. Smart players sometimes choose to put small money on Zero, just to even things out and to celebrate instead of cry when the ball lands in the Zero pocket. It happens more often than you may think or want!
There are many other side bets and betting patterns a player can apply to cover a certain portion of the roulette wheel, and therefore directly manipulate his chances of winning on a given spin. For example, if the player chooses to cover two thirds of the numbers with his bets, then of course he will have a 2/3 chance of winning. Likewise, if a player chooses a single number, he has 1/36 chance of winning but will win big when he does.
Since roulette is a game of chance and the outcome of each spin is random, some players choose to apply betting strategies to increase their chances of winning and to reduce their chances of bankruptcy. These betting strategies are all strict staking strategies that tell you when and where to place what size of bet in order to maximize your chances of winning and reduce chances of losing. It is not yet known if any of these strategies actually work, as it must be known that the outcome of the next spin isn’t affected by the last spin or last 1000 spins, it’s totally independent. It’s perfectly possible to lose a Red/Black bet 20 times in a row. Worse things have happened to roulette players, and the most important lesson for a roulette newbie is to not believe you can in any way predict the next spin or that you’re in any way entitled to “finally win”. Every spin is totally independent, a coin flip.
